From light tan to biscuit or even deeper brown, usually with straight, sometimes irregular grain. It is a hard wood, heavy and dense with high crushing and bending strength. It will take a high polish.
There are over 600 species in the northern hemisphere. Ours is a European or English Oak, FSC. It is said that the oak is the most common broadleaved woodland tree in Britain. Some are 800 years old.
Oak was prized for shipbuilding. About 2000 oak trees were used to build HMS Victory. There is evidence that in Europe, oak was used for house building as long ago as 9000 years. It is used for railway sleepers too.
