Pale cream to pale pinkish brown with a flecked brown, short grain structure. Medium hard with a high crushing strength. Ours has been ‘steamed’ – a method of stabilising the wood, preventing the wood drying out and cracking, giving the pinkish effect.
Trees grow to 30-45 meters (100-150 ft) and grow in Europe, Canada, North America and Asia. Can live about 300-400 years. Ours is European (FSC).
Good for turning, makes good handles, furniture, sports equipment, musical instruments and kitchen utensils. Charcoal from beech apparently makes good gunpowder.
